Symbolism of Some Processes of the Korean Traditional Funeral Rite from the Viewpoint of Analytical Psychology
Lee Do-Hee

Abstract
We often meet various kinds of deaths in dreams and fantasies. In dream we can see the deaths of close relatives and even those of ourselves, and sometimes we can meet corps of unknown person. Such dreams usually make us fearful and frightening reactions, because the world of death is unknown to us and for that reason belongs to the unconscious world. Then, for what purpose does the unconscious present such a dreadful figure to us? When I was worried about this question, an early childhood memory of the funeral custom of my neighbor occurred to me. It was a memory with the awful and divine feelings.

So I had a mind to take the Korean Traditional Funeral Rite as an object of my study to know the symbolic meaning of the death by amplification method which is used to study the universal symbolic meaning in analytical psychology.

The Korean Traditional Funeral Rite were for the most part from the Chuja Karehñ¹íÊ«ÖÉ("The Book of Family Rituals compiled by Chujañ¹í in China"). It has been deeply influenced by Confucian thought, particularly neo-Confucian variety. But there were also Buddhistic and shamanistic influences in Korean Traditional Funeral Rite.

Among the 19 processes -from Cho-Jongôøðû to Gil-JeÑÎð®- of the Korean Traditional Funeral Rite, my amplification is focused mainly on the processes of the Cho-Jong and the treatment of the body of the deceased(Seupã© and RyumÖ°). The other processes were treated rather in short.
